Tattoo After Care

Congratulations on your new tattoo! Here are your instructions for aftercare:

Upon arriving home immediately remove the bandage (if tattoo is covered) and wash tattoo with warm soapy water using only finger tips. Scent and dye free soap is encouraged. Avoid washcloths and sponges etc. as they can be abrasive and damage your fresh tattoo. Note that water will seem much hotter than usual on your new tattoo as it is an open wound. Wait about 24 hours before applying lotion. Applying lotion prior to the 24 hour mark may yield a stinging and burning sensation and provides no real benefit to the healing process.

Your lotion of choice should be scent/dye free and water based. Here again, your tattoo is an open wound and these additives may damage tattoo and cause pain. If you are unsure if your lotion is water based please refer to the ingredients list on bottle. If water is listed as the first ingredient it is indeed water based. Please avoid petroleum based ointments as they may hurt color retention, yielding a prematurely faded tattoo.

Lotions like Lubriderm, Aveeno, Eucerin etc. are amongst the most commonly used. You will now begin washing/applying lotion about 4-5 times evenly spaced across the day for about the duration of two weeks. At some point your tattoo will begin to peel and flake like a sunburn. DO NOT itch, pick or over wash said flakes in an attempt to remove them prematurely. Doing this will cause fading and or the actual removal of tattoo ink pigment. As you could imagine, this will deeply impact how well your tattoo heals and looks.

You will also need to avoid soaking your tattoo in a bath tub, hot tub, pool or ocean water etc. for two weeks. Shower is absolutely fine. For those same two week also avoid tanning and or direct sun exposure. Wear loose fitting clothes over the tattoo as materials like denim etc. will also harm the healing process. For the first several days your tattoo will ooze a bit and may stain anything it comes in contact with like clothing and bed linens. Thank you for your business!
